Three Phase PDU

A Three Phase PDU, otherwise known as a power distribution unit, is a well-constructed, multiple outlet, power strip which is highly reliable and delivers consistent, conditioned power.  A Three Phase PDU can range from a large industrial unit which reduces high voltage and current to useful levels to smaller units which are used in networking, telecom, and other electrically intensive applications.

A three phase PDU is often coupled with a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to further mitigate the risk of power failure in mission-critical applications that demand continuous power.  A three phase PDU can offer a myriad of features such as remote monitoring, environmental monitoring, and control down to individual plug levels.

A Three Phase PDU  is one of two basic varieties of PDU's which also includes single phase PDU.  The three phase PDU and single phase PDU are differentiated by the type of input power.  With a Three Phase PDU, each of the three phases appears individually on every third receptacle.  A three phase PDU can be configured in several different ways as follows:

  • Metered – Equipped with displays that show current load on each phase.

  • Switched – Where some, or all, of the receptacles can be individually switched on or off remotely.

  • Basic and/or Dumb – No instrumentation or not managed.

All of the above types of three phase PDU's offer their own unique benefits.  For obvious reasons, a switched Three Phase PDU can be a more costly investment compared with the relative low cost of a basic three phase PDU.  Depending on your power source needs and budgetary requirements, there is a three phase PDU to meet the needs of your specific application.

A Three Phase PDU is found in a variety of power source applications and are commonly used for permanent placement inside rack enclosures.  The rack configuration of a three phase PDU can be horizontal in a one to two space form factor or vertical in a 4’ to 6’ zero rack space.  Irregardless of a horizontal or vertical configuration, they serve as the primary entry point for power into a rack.

A Three Phase PDU provides power source reliability while providing conditioned power that is sourced from a larger, centralized UPS (uninterrupted power supply) or generator installation in individual, small, and large applications.  Three Phase PDU's are outfitted with 10’ to 15’ input cords, enabling connection to distant power sources or from the top of a 6'+ rack.
