Three Phase Switchgear

Three Phase Switchgear is a power source product that is widely used in a  variety of applications to power down electrical equipment.  The power down process that occurs through three phase switchgear allows work to continue while clearing power faults downstream.

One of the main purposes of Three Phase Switchgear is to isolate electrical equipment and it accomplishes this task with it’s compilation of fuses, circuit breakers, and disconnects.   Three Phase Switchgear also provides other important benefits such as metering, protection, and communications.

Three Phase Switchgear is available in a variety of configurations including  low voltage, high voltage, and circuit breaker switchgear, to name just a few.  The one thing that all switchgear has in common is that they offer isolation and protection where ever the need may be.  Several types of popular Three Phase Switchgear include the following:

  • Three Phase Low Voltage Switchgear – Commonly found in power distribution and control centers as well as industrial applications, this type of switchgear is located on the low voltage side of transformers.  They can also combined with transformers in one location to create a unit substation.

  • Three Phase High Voltage Switchgear – Usually requires a large amount of space and are commonly found in outdoor locations where they are insulated by air.  When space is at an minimum, switchgear that is insulated with oil, gas, or vacuum can be a great alternative because they do not utilize as much space.  However, it should be noted that air insulated models generally have less equipments costs.

  • Three Phase Circuit Breaker Switchgear - This type of switchgear is designed to interrupt fault currents that range from hundreds to thousands of amps.  Circuit breaker switchgear accomplishes this in a very fast manner, 30 ms – 150 ms, with speed variable upon the device’s age and design.  Circuit breaker switchgear utilizes a thoughtful, careful, design to quench the arc when contacts open.

  • Three Phase Multi-Type Switchgear - This type of switchgear is hallmarked by the incorporation of several different types of devices which work together.  There is not one definition of what three phase multi-type switchgear is because the devices utilized in this configuration are variable.  An example of a multi-type switchgear set up could include manual or automatic switches with something like a vacuum circuit breaker, all co-existing in the same work space.
