Three Phase Variac

A Three Phase Variac is a type of variable voltage transformer that has been around almost eighty years and continues to be an important, and fairly common, piece of power source equipment.  Working as a tapped inductor, the primary job of a Three Phase Variac transformer is to provide AC electricity that is voltage adjustable.  With power ranging from 1V - 140VAC, a three phase variac transformer is usually connected to a wall outlet with a knob-controlled output.  Voltage of a three phase variac transformer is dependent upon how the windings are connected. 

Because a three phase variac transformer does not provide isolation from the wall outlet, they are not well suited as a direct source of power for low voltage devices.  However, three phase variac transformers are commonly utilized in the following applications:

  • Tube audio for powering experimental circuits.

A Three Phase Variac transformer  is typically offered in two model types.  One of these types is the open frame model and the other is the bench model.  The open frame three phase variac transformer is intended for panel mounting as part of a larger piece of equipment or as an equipment rack.  The inductor and electrical connections are exposed in this type of transformer but the principles of a variable transformer remain the same. 

The bench Three Phase Variac transformer is designed with a ventilated metal shield and a control knob on top.  The shield houses and contains the winding(s).  The bench three phase variac transformer typically has many components which include one or more AC outlets, a fuse, a line cord, an on/off switch and often times a  voltage or current meter.  Whichever type of three phase variac transformer your application requires, remember that they are designed for a very specific input voltage and frequency. 

Three Phase Variac transformers are not designed to work well with other input frequencies.  The only variables with a three phase variac transformer are the output frequencies.  The three phase variac transformer operates by utilizing a conductive slider which moves along the windings.  As the slider moves through various parts of the winding, the variation in output voltage occurs.  The three phase variac transformer uses inductance, not resistance, to replace voltage.  This is a benefit which allow the three phase variac transformer to produce a higher output voltage.
