When voltage levels must be maintained, a Three Phase Voltage Regulator is the answer, providing the important service of keeping voltage levels constant.  A Three Phase Voltage Regulator can accomplish this goal in several ways which may include the use of an electro mechanical mechanism, or active/passive electronic components.  Some three phase voltage regulators are specifically designed to address the regulation of one, or multiple, AC or DC voltages. 

The operation of today’s three phase voltage regulators includes the comparison of actual output voltage to an internal, fixed, reference voltage.  Voltage differentials are then amplified and this amplification is what controls the regulation element, creating a negative feedback servo control loop.  Depending on whether the voltage output is low or high, different scenarios are possible as follows:

  • To lower voltage – A lower voltage is produced via the regulation elements command.  Often the sourcing current is simply stopped and the voltage is pulled down by the current draw of what is driving it. 

Whether the voltage output is being raised or lowered, the output voltage generally remains consistent thanks to a carefully designed control loop.  The control loop weighs stability and speed of response to produce the maximum result without sacrificing performance.
